Suzhou has become synonymous with wedding dresses across China for the last 20 years, with the historic area surrounding Tiger Hill developing a booming wedding dress market. Dresses produced in and around this market space account for eighty percent of the total world wide wedding dress sales, making it a space with tremendous impact. The construction and presentation of dresses in the various spaces of the market, from the old outdoor street market to the bridal-centric shopping center developed as ‘Huqiu Bridal City’ varies in terms of materials, shape, and customization, among other variables. This workshop aims to provide an opportunity for a speculative design approach to wedding dresses, and to explore the possibilities of re-imagining the dress itself.
